Podcast With Tammy Woods – Do More Bars

WAHMoms/WAHDads host Deborah Carney is joined by guest Tammy Woods.

Four years ago at the age of 45, I was at a crossroads. The real estate broker license I had earned after my divorce was looking like a big mistake. I liked the flexibility of real estate because it did allow me to work from home more. But, the market bottomed out. The question was, how to make a living and still homeschool my daughter? My daughter was 9 at this point. The answer came one day via my daughter. She was eating one of my special recipe cereal bars and said, “Mom, these things totally rock. This is what you need to do. People would love these and you could keep working from home.”

I have always loved to cook and came up with this cereal bar recipe as a healthy alternative to rice crispy treats. They satisfied her taste buds and my health conscious mind. So her comment planted the seed and before long it grew into a business. Today, Do More Bars are sold in over 100 stores and on-line at www.DoMoreBars.com My daughter is 13 now and we still homeschool. The business is growing and more demanding but this is also good for my daughter. She has had to step up and become more independent with her schedule and schooling. She also sees what it takes to make a business run and at times has to help.

Although we stick to schedules, we have the flexibility to alter as needed. I love the times we spend just getting to run errands together; talking and laughing. With all the influences in this world that do not promote values, it is nice to be able to spend time with my daughter knowing that a good portion of the influence is positive. The downside to working from home is I tend to work all the time. When you work from home, you are always at work. And with homeschool, I sometimes wander about what she is missing. And although there are drawbacks, the benefits far out weigh them.

I am a mother of an almost 12-year-old daughter, and I recently remarried in February. My daughter’s dad lives nearby, and we share custody. I am the director of communications at MycroBurst, an online crowdsourcing platform for graphic design, and I also freelance write and edit. I left an office-based job I enjoyed in April because I really wanted to work from home, for better work-life balance. Shelly also has a free weekly blog about conscious parenting at http://www.awakeparent.com/blog a facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/AwakeParent She’s on Twitter at https://twitter.com/awakeshelly and she loves Pinterest (maybe a little bit too much) at http://pinterest.com/awakeshelly/

I’ve been working from home for the past six years. I’m a life, dating, relationship, and parenting coach. My daughter is about to turn two years old! I purposely set up my life to be sure I could make a living by working from home before I had a child. I definitely didn’t want to be forced to put my daughter into full time daycare partly because I would rather be with her myself and partly because it’s so expensive! We are incredibly fortunate that my parents and my husbands parents all moved here to be closer to us and to spend time with our daughter. It really does take a village to raise a child!

WAHM-WHAD Podcast With Author and Blogger Fanny Seto

WAHMoms/WAHDads host Deborah Carney is joined by guest Fanny Seto who is a blogger and author who works from home.

From Fanny:
I’ve been working from home for about 7 out of the past 12 years. I run a frugal living blog Living Richly on a Budget and recently wrote an ebook Eating Organic on a Budget. My daughter is 15 months old.

I’ve worked as a wedding videographer, in search engine optimization, and in online marketing. When I was laid off the 2nd time in a row, I found out that I was pregnant. And I knew that I wanted to stay at home with my child. So I worked at building up my blog to earn an income from it. I felt I had the skills and experience to make it happen. And although it’s challenging at times, there’s no other place I’d rather be than at home, raising my daughter.

Here is a section of a transcript of the podcast:
Deborah: What’s the biggest challenge that you think you face as a work at home mom?

Fanny: Finding time to work. At this age she’s walking a lot and running and doing things and she won’t let me be on my computer. Every time I’m at my desk she’ll come over and start playing with my mouse and the keyboard and I really can’t get any work done while she’s awake.

It’s not like when she was crawling or when she couldn’t move and I could just work a couple hours during the day when she was awake. Now all my attention is taking care of her during the day while she’s awake and when she sleeps that’s when I work. The challenge is actually finding time to work and being more productive with my time.

Deborah: Yes, so time management is a big thing with you?

Fanny: Yes.

Deborah: That’s a challenge that probably every work at home mom and dad has even when their kids are older and off in middle school or high school. Then they don’t demand your attention by playing with your mouse and keyboard but all of a sudden they need to be driven here, there and everywhere. How are you balancing that? You said you work when she naps. Does she have a schedule that she keeps or do you just have to wait for her to get tired?

Fanny: She takes one nap during the day so sometimes I do some social media work during that time and I also take a nap. I work at night when she’s asleep. I get most of my work done when she’s asleep. She sleeps at about eight or nine and then I get a few hours of work done. I kind of work two to four hours a day on my blog.

Actually to get my book done it was challenging because I couldn’t do it on those time constraints. What I worked out with my husband is he would take her out during the weekend on a Saturday and I would get some writing done during that time.

Writing a book you can’t just do one hour or two hours. You have to do a big chunk of time to get something done. That’s how we worked it out. Otherwise I don’t think I would have been able to complete the book.

Interview With Work At Home Mom Jennifer Fromke

http://media.blubrry.com/creativemarketingabcs/p/geekcasted.com/WAHM-WAHD/wahm-wahd2-jennifer-fromke.mp3

Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 19:53 — 18.2MB) | Embed

WAHMoms/WAHDads host Deborah Carney is joined by guest work at home mom Jennifer Fromke. Below is an excerpt from the transcript of our interview:

Jennifer:
My name is Jennifer Fromke. I am a wife to a wonderful man and a mother to three incredible kids. I am a new author. I have been writing for three to four years now. My first book was just published this spring. It’s been a really fun ride figuring how to actually have a full-time job when I really didn’t think I was working.

Deborah:
Yes, you have to cross that line from being the “Yes, I’m just writing for fun” to the “No, this is a job and you need to give me some personal space to be able to write.” How did that work out? Your kids would have been relatively young, right? What are the ages of your kids?

Jennifer:
My kids are 12, 14, and 15 now. I guess that’s it’s been about three or four years that I started to write. Really, I did start on a very part-time basis. I was writing whenever I had a couple of spare moments. My family has been incredibly supportive. The kids have been so great. If I tell them that I need to write, they really get that. They have been just excited as me with this whole thing coming out. Seeing an actual book in print on the countertop has been really fun. They have been really helpful which has eased the whole process but at first it was a challenge.

Deborah:
They were used to Mom just being there for them all day.

Jennifer:
Right. Once it got to the point where they were in school all day, there was time for me. There was time to kill so I did get to start working. It was not until I actually got my book contract that I said, “Oh, now I have deadlines.” I really needed to make those deadlines. I needed to have a plan as far as how much I could write by the deadline. That was the big challenge and it really worked out fantastically, I have to say. I’ve learned to write at many places and at many times.

Deborah:
Let’s walk through a typical day. You get up and you get the kids up and off to school.

Annie Howes: Interview With A Work At Home Mom

Welcome to the first episode of Work at Home Moms and Work at Home Dads podcast! I’m your host, Deborah Carney and I was a work at home mom for a whole lotta years. Now my daughter is a work at home mom that homeschools my 12 year old grandson. We have a great lineup of guests, but if you would like to join me on a podcast please fill out the form here.

I’m very pleased that my first guest is a work at home Mom that I watched for years, I’m a “closet” crafter and dabbled in making jewelry and her name was everywhere it seemed, Annie Howes. She has managed to balance working from home with being a Mom for a number of years, and she is a great interviewee (is that a word?) My podcasts are all discussion style, they are informal and that suited Annie to a tee.
