WAHM-WHAD Podcast With Tammy Woods

by ABCSPLUS

WAHMoms/WAHDads host Deborah Carney is joined by guest Tammy Woods.

Four years ago at the age of 45, I was at a crossroads. The real estate broker license I had earned after my divorce was looking like a big mistake. I liked the flexibility of real estate because it did allow me to work from home more. But, the market bottomed out. The question was, how to make a living and still homeschool my daughter? My daughter was 9 at this point. The answer came one day via my daughter. She was eating one of my special recipe cereal bars and said, “Mom, these things totally rock. This is what you need to do. People would love these and you could keep working from home.”

I have always loved to cook and came up with this cereal bar recipe as a healthy alternative to rice crispy treats. They satisfied her taste buds and my health conscious mind. So her comment planted the seed and before long it grew into a business. Today, Do More Bars are sold in over 100 stores and on-line at www.DoMoreBars.com My daughter is 13 now and we still homeschool. The business is growing and more demanding but this is also good for my daughter. She has had to step up and become more independent with her schedule and schooling. She also sees what it takes to make a business run and at times has to help.

Although we stick to schedules, we have the flexibility to alter as needed. I love the times we spend just getting to run errands together; talking and laughing. With all the influences in this world that do not promote values, it is nice to be able to spend time with my daughter knowing that a good portion of the influence is positive. The downside to working from home is I tend to work all the time. When you work from home, you are always at work. And with homeschool, I sometimes wander about what she is missing. And although there are drawbacks, the benefits far out weigh them.
