Why do you need a privacy policy?

This topic is coming up a *lot* all of a sudden. Some of our merchants require a privacy policy and I am getting asked "what is it?" and "why do I need one?".

Many networks require one, Adsense requires it, many merchants require it. I'm really surprised at the number of people that don't know about them. I even had an affiliate tell me "I don't use cookies". Well you actually do. The nature of affiliate tracking involves you setting a cookie when your affiliate link is clicked.

Here is a good example of a Privacy Policy, that is free for you to copy, modify to your site, and use:

http://teamloxly.com/privacy//

The search engines look for privacy policies also, to determine if your site is legitimate. So it is a good idea overall to have one!

I'm not sure if you have checked that site recently. It doesn't display a privacy policy. Any other good suggestions?
